He said that Nottingham bounded right over to the student section and started taking pictures with people. That showed, according to Ravenna athletic director Jim Lunardi, reflecting back on Nottingham's presentation of the gold football at halftime of a Ravens basketball game. "When you have had the opportunity to have good mentors and coaches to help you through life, I'm a better person because I played football." "As you look back on your life, you have to count your blessings," Nottingham said. That's coming from a man who won a Super Bowl. ![]() "I learned so much about teamwork, so much about football, so much about winning, so much about being part of something that was bigger than I was." "My absolute best memories from football came right from Ravenna High School," Nottingham said. Without the choice of flight, the trip from Ocala, Fla., to Ravenna becomes a behemoth - a 14-hour, 975-mile odyssey that's enough to make trips home a rarity. Like many, Nottingham said that he prefers the control of driving over the helplessness of flying, even if the latter is statistically safer. You see, Nottingham, who played fullback at Ravenna and Kent State before he was drafted into the National Football League, now sells insurance in Central Florida and his trips home are limited by his distaste for flying. It was also a golden opportunity to visit his hometown, one that doesn't present itself to the famed fullback very often. ![]() When Don Nottingham returned to Ravenna this winter to present his alma mater with a gold football in honor of his Super Bowl VIII championship with the Miami Dolphins, it was about more than a gold football. ![]()
